Helen says that we, as women, should not excuse ourselves when we are confident about some- thing. “I don’t think highly of myself, [but] I am confident.” Talking from her own experience, she revealed her confidence grows with every achieve- ment she makes and highlights how important it is to cultivate it for us, as women. “I think it’s a thing as a woman where confidence is a huge thing,” she said. “I feel, as children, men are taught to go out there and slay the dragon. And a woman has to be a lady. Our confidence isn’t as cultivated as men were when they were boys.” This, in return, can create friction not only between men and women but between fe- males as well. Helen said she is one of those females who supports others and celebrates their victories as if it was hers. Sisterly supportiveness of other women is indeed an essential trait, and we need more women like Helen to support the change we all want to see in the world. Helen has been in the filmmaking industry for twen- ty years, and till this day puts kindness at the top of her value list. It is her goal to create a safe environ- ment for both men and women who work on her sets. And for those who are aspiring to be filmmak- ers, she advises, “Don’t be a perfectionist; do your art and don’t procrastinate.” She added that it starts with a belief in yourself, and the sooner you will get out of your way, the better. Helen also shared she used to be so nervous, thinking that she was not good enough. Until one day she realised that she had to give herself permission to learn and grow.
