TATE MODERN bite exhibition Jada Brookes explores what visitors can expect to see at the Andy Warhol exhibition being shown at Tate Modern in London. Andy Warhol (1928 – 1987) Self Portrait 1986 Images courtesy of Tate Modern A merican artist, film director, and producer Andy Warhol will always be regarded as the revolutionary leader of the visual art movement, known as pop art, which made a huge impact. His unique bright col- ourful paintings and prints of subjects of celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Mohammed Ali as well as of cans of soup and Brillo pads are respected and recognised everywhere. After all, he is an inspiration to modern-day artists like Banksy who engraves his work in unconventional places for people to see. In partnership with Bank of America, along with additional sup- port from the Andy Warhol Exhibition Supporters Circle, Tate Americas Foundation, Tate International Council, Tate Patrons, and Tate Members, Tate Modern is presenting the Andy War- hol exhibition from 12 March to 6 September 2020 in the Eyal Ofer Galleries. This exhibition celebrates the artist who forged his own distinct path to emerge as the epitome of the pop art moment and whose life and work continues to fascinate people after his death. The presentation also offers visitors a rare personal insight into how Warhol and his work marked a period of cultural trans- formation and provides a new lens through which to view the American icon. It was thanks to his father, an eastern Slovakian who emigrated to the United States in 1914, recognising his son’s artistic talents and saved enough money to pay for his college education. Warhol studied at the Carnegie Institute and gradu- ated with a degree in Pictorial Design in 1949. With over 100 works on display from the artist’s remarkable ca- reer, it seeks to shed light on how his experiences shaped his unique take on 20th-century culture and positioned him within the shifting creative and political landscape. As well as his icon- ic paintings of green Coca-Cola bottles and Marilyn Monroe, you will discover a deeper level around desire, identity, and be- just get it done.
