Mauritius itius For a small island, Mauritius certainly has a lot to see as Samantha Morgan discovered. Full of history, legends, nature, colours, and music, Mauritius is a paradise dream come true. bite travel Photography by Raimonda Balciunaite T he excitement of going to Mauritius is like having your dream holiday realised. This beautiful haven of heaven is how paradise should be with miles of palm-fringed sandy beaches for those who wish to lounge on the beach. Or you could explore the other side of Mauritius by hiking through the mountains, and the Nation- al Parks or soaking up the culture. Colonised by the Dutch, French, and British throughout history, you see traces of their presence in the colonial mansions and botanical gardens. Something I found fascinating, although it is nothing new, is the cultural mix of African, Indian, and Chinese heritage that gives the island an authentic feel, along with the colour- ful markets and temples, fusion cuisine, and the sashaying to séga. I don’t know about the story of an islander telling Mark Twain that, “Mauritius was made first and then heaven and heaven was copied after Mauritius” but I most certainly agree it is a gorgeous island that gives you the freedom to embrace all that it has to offer you.
