The Bite Magazine - Spring/Summer 2020 - Issue 27

Photography:Tony Wellington O n the 7th of February 2020, the Imperial College Fashion and Design Society presented its 2020 Charity Fashion Show at the Union Concert Hall in South Kensington. The event was in support of ClientEarth, European’s pioneering environmental law firm that helps minimise the impact of climate change and protect irreplaceable habitats and vulnerable species. The Preparation Producer Malinda Davies and designer manager Sofia Patri worked closely with Imperial College fashion students and volunteers to put the event together. Meeting Sofia during one of the Bite Magazine fashion shoots gave us the idea to join forces with South Thames College in Wandsworth Town. As their media make-up tutor, we collaborated with a selection of 18 students from the hair and make-up courses to create a look for the Imperial College student models. This enabled them to have a real taste of hands-on experience on a live catwalk. Together with the support of curriculum manager Rosie Webb, we started planning the looks with the themes of Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean and Beyoncé’s Crazy in Love, with the ‘80s meets modern noughties’ vibes. The garments were a mixture of beautiful lingerie, day and evening wear, beachwear, and funky London styles from eleven designers. The make-up was a reflection of both periods capturing the strong, vibrant colours of the ‘80s style with lots of bright oranges, blues, greens, and strong fuchsia on the eyes and blended with a twist of the noughties with lots of contouring and strong, voluptuous sexy lips. The hairstyles consisted of glorious curls and huge crimped hairdos to represent the big hair of the ’80s with a modern twist. All the students had the important job of creating make-up and hair designs for the 20 models. There are a lot of things to be taken into considera- tion when putting together a look: understanding the designers, their style, what they are looking for in a look; the elements of natural, colourful, modern factors; the number of models, their skin and hair type and length as well as the time allowed before the catwalk to prepare for make-up and hair. Once this is understood and the designer has put together the pieces to show-off during the catwalk, then the details of the look can be finalised. Looking for ideas is not that difficult, especially if you have a good idea of the style and theme requested, which we did.
