It is thanks to special effects make-up artists on TV and film sets that bring their creativity to life on actors. In most awards cer- emonies, actors and directors are recognised for their achieve- ments in box office hits but behind the scenes, it is the make-up artists that help to bring these realities to life. What we sometimes do not realise or may not consider is the length of time it takes the special effects make-up artists to ap- ply and complete the transformation. This can usually be up to four hours, or more depending on the complexity of the character’s physical form. Many of the characters’ make-up in science fiction and horror TV series and films are made from prosthetics which can be manipulated and styled to look like the real thing. In January this year, the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild held their 7th annual event during a formal gala at the Novo by Microsoft in L.A. Live downtown and awarded winners in 23 categories of film, television, commercials, and live theatre. These included feature motion pictures Bombshell, Joker, and Downton Abbey ; television series Big Little Lies , Fosse/Verdon , and Chernobyl ; and special/motion pictures made for television Saturday Night Live , Dancing with the Stars , and Deadwood: The Movie. Located in the centre of the entertainment capital of the world in Los Angeles, the Novo accommodates over 2,300 guests and is the perfect venue for emerging music and culture shows, as well as corporate events and private parties. So this was the ideal venue to host the annual gala and celebrate winners in the many categories recognised by the guild. For this particular event, over 900 guests were in attendance including guild mem- bers, industry executives, and press.
