In 2012, he released his fifth studio album Tomahawk Technique which featured the singer on the cover with his new hairstyle as well as working with the hottest pro- ducers in R&B and pop music at the time. “This album is about keeping up with the times,” the artist told MTV. “Dance music has been really something that’s taken over international circles. Every music kinda has that tempo now. While I’m not planning on doing straight-up dance mu- sic, I’m wanting to fuse what’s going on. It’s dancehall with an edge.” His decision to work with mostly non-Jamaican pro- ducers was to help set himself apart from the rest and believes you sometimes “have to step [out] of bounds to get a different flavour and check that out.” In the same way, he bridged the gap between dancehall un- derground and mainstream in the noughties, with this album he wanted to combine dancehall with other genres and broad- en his artistry by working with Rico Love, Benny Blanco, and Stargate. “What’s going to surprise fans is that there’s a lot more singing, more high notes that I never used to do before,” he explained, adding, “it’s a mixture of pop music into dance music.” He also asked the producers to try and make dancehall from their perspective. From this album, there were tracks like ‘Got 2 Luv U’ fea- turing Alexis Jordan, ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ featuring the lovely Kelly Rowland, ‘She Doesn’t Mind’ and ‘Touch the Sky’. Thanks to the artist’s collaboration with Rémy Martin in which 40 winners from the USA and the Caribbean won the oppor- tunity to party at the Jamaica Sean Paul concert, the after-con- cert party and stay at luxury Sandals villas, we saw a few bot- tles being poured in the music videos for ‘Got 2 Luv U’, ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ and ‘She Doesn’t Mind’. Before the release of his latest song ‘When It Comes to You’ (at the time of writing), Sean Paul teamed up with Stefflon Don on ‘Shot & Wine’. He also joined forces with DJ Snake, and Anitta on ‘Fuego’, a Latino beat with a bit of dancehall vibe thrown in. In the video for ‘When It Comes to You’, Sean Paul sings about his secret admiration for his beautiful assistant who looks after him while he’s doing a shoot. Whilst he’s surrounded by biki- ni-clad hotties, he only has eyes for her. Her appearance on every billboard and magazine cover during the shoot and when they’re on the move is probably making him wonder if he is going crazy but perhaps it’s because she is subconsciously on his mind that he sees her everywhere. He decides he’s fed up of doing the shoot, and calls her over, telling her that he’s ready to leave. When she tells him they’re still working, he replies, ‘dem nah miss we!” (They won’t miss us). With that, they drive off and enjoy some personal time together. A nice mellow romantic and catchy tune, Sean Paul brings us back to his dancehall roots with ‘When It Come to You’. He also gave the contestants on Love Island a performance treat on Sunday 9th February when he hosted a Spotify party. His attendance on the show was meant to help ease up the tension after the guys coming back from Casa Amor revealed whether they stuck with or swapped their current partners.
