After meeting in 2010, the couple would go on a rollercoaster of break-ups, make-ups, and fluke reconciliations which finally came to head in early 2018. After a short hiatus, Gomez came back in 2019 in full force with new music describing her tumultuous love encounter with Bieber. Speaking on the Zach Bang Show after the release of her song ‘Lose You to Love Me’, the singer talked about her toxic first love. “You’re in a phase of life where you expe- rience love for the first time, and I think that can just be a little toxic,” she explained. “You have this co-dependency that you think is love, and then you have this addic- tion to the passion and the frustration with each other that you think, ‘Oh, that’s love’… and I believed that for a long time.” Many didn’t have to guess who the song was aimed at since she had a long history with Bieber. Despite this, Gomez defended the intention of her first release in a while. “It’s not a hateful song; it’s a song that is saying - I had something beautiful and I would never deny that it wasn’t that. It was very difficult and I’m happy it’s over.” In the heart-wrenching and moving song, she sings about betrayal and disappointment and having to release herself from the pull of a person who brought out only the worst in her. She followed this up quickly with the upt- empo track ‘Look At Her Now’ which pre- sents her as a stronger and mature woman in the music video who, after bearing her pain in her previous song, is now ready to show the world she can move on from her GO M SEL
