He had many ideas and was very precise about them.” That meeting was the result of these legacy rare images that captured the creative alliance between Bowie and Klinko and produced the in- credible and previously unseen shots taken on that extraordinary day that would later be curated for the Bowie Unseen exhibition being shown at both Tramp nightclub and Zebra One Gallery. A percent- age of the proceeds from the sale of the images will go to Macmillan Cancer Support in honour of the music icon whose life was tragically cut short by the disease. An award-winning, international fashion and celebrity photographer and director, Marcus Klinko has worked with many of today’s icon- ic stars of film, music, and fashion. He has photographed the likes of Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, David Bowie, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Anne Hathaway, Will Smith, Naomi Campbell, and Iman; Worked with publications such as Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, and Interview magazine, and brands including Hugo Boss, Nike, L’Oréal, Anna Sui and Skyy Vodka. Klinko, who was born in Switzerland and is of French, Italian, Jewish, and Hungarian descent, didn’t start out as a photographer. He spent his early years training to become a classical harp soloist and studied at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique (Superior Conservatory of Music) in Paris. He later signed an exclusive recording contract with EMI Classics, as well as a management contract with Columbia Artists Management. The then musician received the Grand Prix de Disque Award for his recording of French harp music, with members of the Paris Opera Bastille orchestra. He also performed in recitals and as a featured so- loist with symphony orchestras around the world. During this time, he was regularly featured in such publications as Vogue Italia, Vanity Fair, GQ, The New York Times, Madame Figaro, Stereo Review, and Ongaku no Tomo. It was after a hand injury that Klinko turned to fashion photography and retired from his international concert and recording career. Isa- bella Blow discovered his work while at The Sunday Times and com- missioned cover stories from the emerging photographer. Around the same time, Ingrid Sischy at Interview magazine hired him for various shoots. This was followed by commissioned work from Iman and David Bowie. He then went on to create some of the most iconic album covers such as Beyoncé’s Dangerously In Love. Markus Klinko is also a philanthropist and his campaign for Keep A Child Alive raised more than $1 million for children with AIDS in just a few days. Fans of David Bowie and curious parties will be delighted with Bow- ie Unseen by Klinko which is showing at Zebra One Gallery during the month of November.
