bite jewellery Being a part of the Cockpit Arts collective in Holborn, central London, Sarah says she is surrounded by some incredible jew- ellers. “Some of my favourites there are Tania Clarke Hall, Ali- son Flanders, Stepan Terteryan, and Teri Howes.” As someone who believes that a clear creative intention makes a quality piece of jewellery, if she had to choose a celebrity to wear her designs, it would be English-French actress and singer Char- lotte Gainsbourg, which she said, “would be amazing.” When she’s not working or creating pieces of art, Sarah likes to relax. “I love stories and spend a lot of time reading, watch- ing movies, and listening to podcasts. My favourite podcast at the moment is called On Being with Krista Tippett. I also teach and practice yoga.” Due to the pace she works at, when it comes to preparing for a fashion shoot or show, time can pre- vent her frommaking up extra work right before the occasion, so she prefers to choose what she wants to show and decide how to present it. She revealed that mark-making and drawing are part of her practice and have become more important over the years. “I capture the particular rhythms and dynamics of the music or movement I’m working with through an active drawing pro- cess using charcoal, graphite, pastel, and powder pigment. I then create sculptural jewellery pieces from the drawings. I now display and sell my drawings along with my jewellery. Drawing and making jewellery is equally important and a great contrast to each other.” In her jewellery work, Sarah loves the colour of brushed gold, which she enjoys contrasting with dark grey burnished rough diamonds, while in her drawings, she is working with the contrast between grey and black pastel, and bright orange pigment. Her favourite material to work with is 18-carat gold because “it has a lovely feel in the hands and also has a lively spring which holds my sculptural shapes.” She also likes the challenge and creative charge of collaborating with people who work in different mediums to her. “Doing more of this is definitely a goal.” For aspiring jewellery designers, she would advise them to, “find what makes you curious and then you’ll always have a bank of ideas to draw on.” Project-wise, for now, she doesn’t have any other future plans in the pipeline but would love to do another collaborative project very soon. However, Sarah has just finished a drawing commission and is getting ready for Open Studios at Cockpit Arts Holborn which will run from 29th November to 1st December 2019. http://sarahwarsop.com
