bite lifestyle The name Smeg is the abbreviation of Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla which roughly translates into a smelting and metal enamelling plant; the business that Vittorio initially started. For over 60 years, the Italian home appliance brand has produced a wide range of upscale, elegant domestic designs that includes a vast choice of Italian-inspired luxury kitchen appliances. It is because of their real ‘fun’ factor to cooking that has attracted consumers to the brand for so many years. Inspired by the Italian Riviera, Smeg launched a new range of Por- tofino fridges and added more colour pop to their Portofino cook- ers. It was thanks to the roaring success of these cookers in 2017 that the brand decided to introduce the fridges to the collection. Designed in five statement finishes of red, black, anthracite, stain- less steel, and white, measuring 70 cm, the fridge’s eye-catching angles neatly fit into the kitchen whilst offering a dramatic way to introduce a dash of colour to your overall scheme. Designed with both refrigerator and freezer compartments, the new Portofino models boast an A++ energy efficiency class and an impressive gross capacity of 508 litres. Other features include dou- ble side LED light for improved visibility, double-zone electronic temperature control and Multi-Cooling Nofrost technology, manu- al ice maker, a vegetable box with humidity control, and a 0-degree storage chiller, helping keep foods fresher for longer. The additional pop colours in the cookers, inspired by the rich tones of the Mediterranean, are red, white, turquoise, stainless steel, and black. The collection now includes five larger Portofino mul- ti-cavity cookers, measuring 120 cm wide, and is deemed the most technically advanced cooker Smeg has made. Along with the exist- ing eight bright and playful 90 cm Portofino cookers and hoods, the 120 cm cookers feature a mixed hob, including three gas burners and dual UR 4.2 kilowatts. It also has an electric teppanyaki plate and an induction domino with multi-zone that is perfect for larger families and those who like to entertain at home. Each 120 cm cooker is equipped with two soft-close doors, both of which showcase 4.3-inch window displays presenting two touch timers. The 60 cm wide left oven has an A+ energy rate Pyrolytic function, meaning you never have to scrub your oven again, while the right oven, also 60 cm wide, has an A energy rated multifunction over with direct steam. Smeg’s most recognisable iconic piece is the industry-changing FAB fridge which has had the latest FAB38 models added to the collection. Launched in September 2019 at London Design Festival, the eye-catching curves of the FAB38 are available in a choice of pastel blue, pastel green, red and white or black and cream, mark- ing the first time the brand has added to its retro line-up in recent years. The retro-inspired 1950s style fridge was first launched in the 1990s and has remained synonymous with the brand. FAB38 offers a new elegant proportion allowing for increased and much-needed refrigerator space, as well as a unique statement de- sign. Fitting nicely between the FAB32 and FAB50, the 70 cm fridge would be suitable for country settings in period homes or even modern-style apartments and new builds. It has refrigerator and freezer spaces which integrate the brand’s class-leading technology, double side LED lighting, a manual ice maker and multi-cooling and no-frost technology.
