bite catwalk E arth shatteringly magnificent designs took to the catwalk from Ulises Mérida, the closing designer of Madrid Fash- ion Week for this AW19. This season’s collection is titled ‘Vals’ - Spanish for Waltz. Classical music set the scene as we marvelled at the rich Tyrian purple and olive-green silks - tied at one shoulder - that draped against the models. The use of these colours and draping evoked imagery of togas, traditionally worn by the Romans. Such colours in addition to the Royal and Tuscany yellows fashioned an air of expense due to the historical connota- tions of the Roman empire, making up the rich colour palette for the ‘Vals’ collection. The Waltz, an era renowned for its romantic dance style, is per- sonified through the collection’s dreamy strapless evening gowns. Layers of sheer organza revealed the luscious silks that reached and flowed to the floor. Ribbed knits hung from the body, held up by thick faux fur allowing for casual looks within this overall so- phisticated collection. Astounding silhouettes pulled together with never-seen-before statuesque white clay bodices illustrated further correlations with classical art. The designer brought the opera to the runway, shifting the atten- tion from the unseen stars, to the guests attending the theatre, rep- resented by the models.
