The Bite Magazine - Summer 2019 - Issue 25
bite exhibition in Dublin’ in collaboration with Michael Hoppen Gallery. I was impressed by Eamonn’s installation, with the music and visuals managing to create something very personal and at- mospheric; a beautiful work. Attending the talk entitled ’The Ever-Intriguing Vivian Maier’; I found this very inspiring and profitable. Vivian once said, “Well, I suppose nothing is meant to last forever. We have to make room for other people. It’s a wheel. You get on, you have to go to the end. And then somebody has the same opportunity to go to the end and so on.” Herald- ed as one of the most acclaimed photographers of the last century, she took the world by storm with the posthumous discovery of images that captured the universality of the human condition. Born in New York City, with ancestry of French and Aus- tro-Hungarian, Vivian travelled between Europe and the United States before coming back to the Big Apple in 1951. While working as a nanny, she pursued photography in her spare time and would comb the streets of New York to re- fine her artistic craft. It is said that she would shoot photos that she zealously hid from the eyes of others. Taking snap- shots into the late 1990s, she would leave behind a body of work comprising of over 100,000 negatives. Having visited Photo London 2019, I found the amount of work displayed here overwhelming. Some of the work de- scribed emotional experiences such as sorrow or the pas- sage of time, while other stage situations were very often theatrical. Overall, the photographers’ work I saw were representatives of drama, contemplative or mysterious sit- uations. I have learnt a lot seeing the same imagery several times which evoked the perception of work that changed when seen the following day. Photo London will be held next year from 14th to 17th May 2020. https://photolondon.org Vivian Maier Self-Portrait, Chicago N.D Ed. 8/15 Gelatin silver print; printed 2018 12 x 12 inches © Estate of Vivian Maier, Courtesy of Maloof Collection and Howard Greenberg Gallery, NY Rachel Louise Brown The Mermaid,WeekiWachee Springs, 2017 © Rachel Brown Mary McCartney Ballerina in Sink, London, 2004 © Mary McCartney
