The Bite Magazine - Summer 2019 - Issue 25

bite beverage I n traditional Caribbean folklore, a duppy is the patios word for malevolent dark spirits or ghosts. Apparently, there are good and bad duppies: the good ones are usually deceased friends and family who appear to you in a dream to give advice or information. The bad ones, including mali- cious energies, often haunt or disrupt earthly beings. It is said that eating salt will help you get rid of these duppies. Another way is to wear your clothes inside out which will send them into a frenzy and ‘run' them. How true these actual stories are remain to be seen. But the ‘duppies’ in The Duppy Share are not these evil individ- uals, but rather the cheeky ones. It is the golden blend of Car- ibbean rum from Jamaica and Barbados that embrace the play- ful spirit of the islands to fuel fun and mischief with friends. And whilst its name is derived from these supernatural beings, they are, as the brand say, “mischievous, rum-loving Caribbean spirits that swoop between the distilleries stealing the best of the rum.” It is further said that the combination of the two type of rums that they steal is actually called ‘The Duppy Share’ and the duppies take this to fuel the most epic of parties. A balanced blend of fiery and smooth premium 3-year old and 5-year old rums from the beautiful Worthy Park Estate in Ja- maica and the prestigious Foursquare Distillery in Barbados respectively, you will experience the flavours of tropical fruits followed by a warm buttery finish, that is combined to create a vibrant, accessible and versatile concoction that can be served with coke, ting or ginger beer or even shaken up into a daiquiri. Having these two contrasting island types makes The Duppy Share the perfect partner for punch and other rum cocktails like Jamaican Mule and Golden Mojito. “The Duppy Share is a perfectly balanced, approachable blend, not a sugary sweet spiced rum, clad in clichéd pirate packag- ing, or an uninspiring bottle gathering dust in a corner,” said founder George Frost. “The Duppy Share is about bringing the energy of the Caribbean to any occasion. It’s a brand for any- one who loves rum, but more importantly, anyone who loves to have fun - as we all know, time flies when you’re having rum.” The ‘Duppy Share’ name is similar to the term ‘Angel Share’ which is when the whisky being aged in barrels in Scotland evaporates over time and is believed to go to angels. One of the distilleries used by The Duppy Share, Worthy Park Estate in Jamaica, started growing sugar in 1721 and distilling rum in 1740, making them the earliest rum producers in Ja- maica according to records. The estate grows all of their own sugar cane, make their own molasses, and distil and age their rum on site. The use of traditional copper pot stills give the rum its distinctive Jamaican punch which is achieved by ageing the rum in old white bourbon barrels. It is said that the warm days and cool nights of the Jamaican hills increase the rate of ageing, giving the rum an exceptional flavour and character. Found on the south-east side of the island in St. Philip, Christ Church, Barbados, the prestigious Foursquare Distillery is pre- sided over by fourth generation master distiller Richard Seale. This facility run by R. L. Seale & Company who has been in business since 1920 and took over the once abandoned sugar factory in 1995, uses a combination of continuous and pot still distillations that give the rum a unique character. Aged for five years in old bourbon barrels, the rum is beautifully smooth with notes of caramel, oak and a warm buttery finish. There are several classic cocktails that can be made with Duppy Share.
