The Bite Magazine - Summer 2019 - Issue 25

e’ve always associated the Joker with the Batman films, but since then he has appeared in other variations such as Suicide Squad and Lego Batman played by a series of actors including the original Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, and now Joaquin Phoenix. But never has this seemingly deceiving character had his own premiere film in which we get to learn how and why he became such a character in the first place. Portrayed as a loner who lives with his mother, Arthur Fleck is a failing, ageing stand-up comedian in the 1980s who dresses up as a clown and tries to bring a smile to everybody just like his mother told him to “put on a happy face’. But rejected by society who see him as a freak, this has an adverse effect on him and so Arthur eventu- ally becomes the supervillain as displayed in the original comic books created by Bill Finger, and the clown prince of crime causing havoc all over Gotham City. Without the hero antics of Batman, it is down to the law enforcement to capture and bring him in but the Joker is much too clever for them. And because this is his own film and not Batman’s, it would be crazy to have the ‘bat’ himself hunting him down. A psychological thriller involving a man who just needed to be understood and appreciated, it can be amazing what the mind can do to a man through the behavioural actions of others.
