East Side Gallery was once part of the Berlin Wall and is now the longest open-air gallery in the world. Located on the banks of the Spree River, this roughly one-mile long facility saw 118 artists from 21 countries start painting the East Side Gallery immediately after the wall came down and officially opened as a gallery on 28th September 1990. It was given protected memorial status a year later. Berlin Wall Memorial located on Bernauer Strasse is where visitors can learn about the history of the Berlin Wall. It was created in 1998 and commemorates the division of the city, containing the last piece of the wall with the preserved grounds behind it, which visitors can view. The Reichstag’s impressive Norman Foster-designed glass dome of the Reichstag will give you great views of the city, is transparent and opened to the public. To visit this stunning parliament building, you need to register in advance to avoid disappointment. The Pergamon Museum is Berlin’s most popular museum, attracting more than 1 million visitors every year. Although it is currently under renovation, you can still visit the rooms in the southern wing that house the Ishtar Gate and Professional Way, the Roman Market Gate of Miletus and the Museum of Islamic Art. Located outside the museum is a huge panorama by artist Yadegar Asis showing the splendour of the ancient city of Pergamon. Gendarmenmarkt is regarded as Berlin’s most beautiful square which holds concerts in the summer and a Christmas mar- ket in the winter. A visit to this square will award you with sightings of the German and French Cathedral and Schinkel’s Konzerthaus. Berlin Cathedral has a magnificent dome and is one of the main landmarks of Berlin’s cityscape. Its full name is Evangeli- cal Supreme Parish and Collegiate Church, which is located on the city’s famous Museum Island.
