The Bite Magazine - Spring 2019 - Issue 24

bite theatre However, with so many versions of some of the main characters it was hard to keep track of whom I had liked in certain scenes. It ended up being characters that I liked instead of individual actors. Perhaps Chavkin could take the feedback that mul- tiple changes of people playing the same character can take away from the story as we (audience) are left sitting in the dark, not allowed to ask each other clarifications but scratching our heads in slight con- fusion until the next good moment of the play. This never seemed to be too far away though, but still… When I attended, the theatre was going through yet some more building works due to finish this autumn. I’m curious as to what improvements will take place this time as the theatre is a lovely space as it is. This 1,000-seater theatre, founded in 1818 by King James, Daniel Dunn and J.T. Serres, has some rich history and perhaps some not so much. The ‘Old Vic’ name came from it formally been named Royal Victoria Theatre (1871), amongst others – it first being the Royal CoburgTheatre. The nickname ‘The Old Vic’ had stuck. Also, it used to be home to The National Theatre whilst its new home in South- bank was being constructed (1963-76). It seems to be a bit of an Arthur Miller Fest as The Old Vic hosts yet another one of his plays, All My Sons , directed by Jeremy Herrin playing 13th April to 8th of June 2019. Other productions left in this season is Present Laughter, directed by Matthew Warchus, who has been the artistic director since Kevin Spacey who held the position previously, stepped down in 2015, playing 17th June to 10th August 2019. Upcoming shows include A Very Expensive Poison by Lucy Prebble and Local Hero by Bill Forsyth & David Greig, dates yet to be confirmed for both. I’ll have to watch out for these as my visit to The Old Vic was rather pleasant and I’d like to revisit soon, especially to see this poison malarkey one. I never did read All My Sons , so that’s on the list too, and if it is anything like The American Clock , I’m in for a treat again. This was certainly a vibrant production with many bodies in both the creative teams and cast.
