The Bite Magazine - Spring 2019 - Issue 24
F ollowing the moment Jean Grey turned dark in X-Men: The Last Stand after a mission to space went wrong and she was hit by a mysterious cosmic force, her transformation into Dark Phoenix is further explored in this sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse. In the follow-up, The X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe, one of their own, and no matter how much they try to defuse the matter, the force within Jean Grey is getting more powerful. And it doesn’t help that Smith, an enemy of the X-Men encourages her to unleash it. As the X-Men band together to work out the best way to defeat Phoenix and the aliens who are trying to use her power against them, Jean Grey struggles with the entity inside her while hurting the people she loves. Using the break between Game of Thrones seasons, Sophie Turner takes on the role of a younger Jean Grey, originally played by Famke Janssen in the X-Men trilogy, outside of the long-run- ning saga she has become famous for. Storm and Cyclops also sees a younger version of themselves being played by different actors. Learning their lessons of killing off Cyclops and Professor Charles Xavier in Last Stand and rectifying this in Days of Future Past , director Simon Kinberg gives audiences a closer look at Jean Grey’s resurrection into this formidable force and the effect it has on the recipient and her former X-Men allies.
