This is a rare oppor- tunity as ciggarales ; out-of-town mansions set among gardens are usually found on the opposite bank of the Tagus and are generally off-limits. Toledo’s hotels are known to be old-fashioned chintz-fests, with gloomy Castilian furniture and way too many pelmets. Antidoto is a breath of fresh air. The hotel’s owner, Julio Romero, a born-and-bred Toledano has made this 16 th century townhouse, which is minutes from Plaza de Zocodover, into a contemporary hotelito with cool polished stucco, Spanish pop art, stylish lighting and Eames chairs. However, there is little service, no breakfast provided and an informal vibe. Not only do they run a restaurant, but the Muñoz family offer the accommodation of Casa Urbana, a two-bedroom apartment in a pleasant if muted modern style to family travellers. The best time to visit Toledo is from April to October: the warmest months are generally July and August, with the driest month being July and the coldest month of year being January.The rainiest months are March, April and December.
