H We say ‘hello’ and welcome back to Adele who recently returned with a new album after a three year hiatus. Samantha Morgan explores the person behind Adele and what makes her a sensational artist. S oulful singer Adele seems to have a thing about numbers. Her very first album was called 19 which was released in January 2008 while she was still 19; her second album entitled 21 was released in early 2011, although by this time she had already passed this particular age and now her latest album has been given another significant number: 25 , despite now being 27. After she graduated from the BRIT School for Performing Arts &Technology in 2006 (where she attended classes with Leona Lewis and Jessie J), Adele’s intention was to go into A&R and launch other people’s careers. However, it was her own music career that ended up being the main focus instead. Having recorded a three-song demo for a class project, the singer gave it to a friend who then posted it on MySpace and it was here that her incredible voice caught the attention of XL Recordings who signed her.Whilst providing vocals for singer-songwriter Jack Peñate, Adele met producer Jim Abbiss who would go on to produce the majority of her soulful debut album, a theme of songs that consisted of heartbreaks and relationships. However, it could have been a completely differ- ent story if Adele had seriously considered going into medicine instead of music following the dev- astating news that her grandfather was dying after a heart attack.“When I was younger I wanted to be a heart surgeon because my grandad died and I was heartbroken that I could literally feel my heart breaking,” she said. “For a few years I put my mind into it that I was going to be a real heart surgeon and then I went to school, got to 13 and I was like ‘nah’. I ain’t doing that. I think that anyone that commits themselves is like a don at that kind of thing.” She then revealed she played ‘Someone Like You’ to her mum who told her, ‘You are mending hearts’, so Adele decided to pursue with her singing instead. When asked by a US radio show about the pressure of waiting so long to release her latest album, she answered, “I just put pressure on myself. It wasn’t coming from anyone else. It is incredible that I’m following something like 21 and that it is never going to bitemusicceleb
