VENICE Six Districts Samantha Morgan explores more of Venice in San Polo and San Marco, two of the city’s six districts. bitetravel T he city of Venice may be a relatively small part of Italy as a whole but there is still so much more to the capital of the Veneto region that makes it much larger than it first appears. It is true that the city built on more than 100 islands is separated by several canals but each one has its own characteristics. San Polo located in the upper curve of the Grand Canal is the smallest of the six sestieri (districts) of Venice: (the others being Cannaregio, Santa Croce, San Marco, Castello and Dorsoduro) covering 86 acres along the canal.The interesting thing about this dis- trict is that it has lots of secretive lanes, intriguing sights such as the Rialto Bridge and shopping ranging from glove shops to the famous Rialto fruit and vegetable markets. This is the perfect place if you want moments of peace, but there are some busy tourist spots as well if you want a bit of excitement.The largest open space in Venice after Piazza San Marco, Campo San Polo is a wide, dusty sort of square where you’ll see children and their domestic pets playing while the adults chat. In the summer, there is an open-air cinema showing a variety of films. But if
