Raw Essen- tials celebrates the G-Star Elwood 5620 by offering a tapered-fit version for men and boyfriend-fit for women in excep- tional Red Listing Madison denim. The jeans is woven on Cone Denim’s antique machines at their White Oak plant in North Carolina, USA and features localised rust marks and vertical slub characteristics. Enhanced by the slub, the rich washes are based on work- wear found in the plant’s archives. The story goes that these garments were discovered in a two-room shack where sharecroppers had once lived. Inside the 1900s-era frame house littered with mag- azines and newspapers, there was a pile of well-worn denim garments found on the floor that had fallen through a sagging ceiling from the attic above and these are the denims that have been brought back to life in the RAW Essentials collection. The G-Star Elwood 5620 jean gets another re-invention for spring/summer 2016 in the form of an innovative paint-splatter finish and new techniques in the Restored Denim range. With a new tapered fit for men and an ultra- high fit and flared-versions for women, the fabrics in this collection takes a step away from the super-stretch qualities of previous seasons toward the more traditional denim structure that feature irregular vertical slub characteristics.The Restored Denim range was created to repair ripped and distressed jeans using techniques taken from the brand’s exten- sive workwear archive that replicates the methods used when jeans needed constant fixing to extend their life. This season, G-Star focuses on horizontal stitch techniques taken from a study of vintage French workwear repair prac- tices which are applied to bleached-down denims from the 1980s. The brand also brings military inspiration into spring/ summer with a just-developed garment dye technique and strong camo styles. This new innovative double-dye tech- nique is applied to complete garments and overdyes the garment with two dif- ferent shades of the same colour: one dark and one light. It works by apply- ing the lighter shade first and then the darker shade at a low temperature causing the larger areas to take the dye and leaving the seams with their origi- nal lighter colour. The technique can be seen on the men’s Air Defence 5620 3D Slim Pant and Garber HDD short trench or the women’s Rovic Field jacket and shorts. Finally, G-Star’s collaboration with industrial designer Marc Newson for this spring/summer presents a Euro/ Japanese streetwear take on American sportswear subtly integrated with hints of leather and Japanese denims.
