Described as “The voice of 2013” by The Evening Standard, the singer-songwriter’s music fuses orchestral soul and emotional vocals. Her music is unique, beautiful and she was nominee for the 2013 BRITs Critics’ Choice Award and ranked highly in fourth place for the BBC Sound of 2013.
The Birmingham singer’s have drawn comparisons with the likes of Amy Winehouse and Nina Simone. Laura Mvula started writing songs on her laptop while working as a supply teacher in a Birmingham secondary school. Now, with some incredible live performances and a praised EP (‘She’ released on the 18th November), 2013 looks set to be an incredible year for her.
“I had a very thorough grounding in music; I’d grown up around songs,” she explains. “My parents listened to a lot of music. My dad was majorly into jazz, which was absolutely a big influence on me, even if it was more subconsciously as a kid.
“My parents were quite strict; we couldn’t just listen to whatever music we wanted. It was very much like they monitored what we listened to,” she says. (The Telegraph)
