The Bite Magazine - Spring/Summer 2020 - Issue 27

Cristina Lloyd looks at the design platform of Adorno which presents locally curated collections from distinct design communities from around the world, encapsulating the most extraordinary examples of contemporary collectible design. bite lifestyle Adorno I n a world filled with many creative talents, it can some- times be difficult for emerging designers to get their work off the ground or recognised when starting while creating a difference in their environment. Networks like Adorno, a digital gallery for the best of collectible design and craft from around the globe based in Denmark, enables emerging de- signers to promote their unique creations on a wider platform, whether it is through textiles, ceramics, sculpture, furniture, or design-art. The collections are selected by a network of on-the-ground cu- rators in major design cities and provide a unique insight into the world’s diverse creative communities and celebrate the work of the designers shaping them. Each unique or limited-edition piece from established and emerging talents at the cusp of their careers is considered contemporary in style, experimental in approach, and exceptional in material quality, showing a snap- shot of the people, techniques, styles, and thinking behind the designs. One of the wonderful things that Adorno does, besides exhib- iting their designers’ work at major design events worldwide, is interview them so that people can get an idea of the designer’s journey, their message, and concept through their work. For example, T Sakhi founded by Lebanese sisters Tessa and Tara Sakhi in 2016 said, “Our role is to somehow create awareness of the importance of urban activities in our daily life and to offer solutions using architecture and design as a medium of expression.” It’s always interesting to learn how design is conceived and perceived in different countries. In Lebanon, the design scene is characterised by experimentation, craft collaboration, and close-knit, creative support. “It is a country rich with talented designers and artists, yet, due to years of instability, the design scene continues to seek widespread international recognition.” Sadly, due to their current political climate and financial crisis, receiving new materials or payment for their work has been difficult.
