bite actor spotlight Actor Spotlight Tilda Swinton M any know Tilda Swinton for her chameleon-like abil- ity to transform and tell the story of characters most truthfully and authentically. Because of her breath- taking artistic career, an audience was invited to the Tilda Swinton season in partnership with BFI Fellowship to celebrate her extraordinary, convention-defying career as one of the cin- ema’s finest and most deft actresses at BFI Southbank. The season included a special Tilda in Conversation event at the British Film Institute in Southbank, London and welcomed her closest collaborators to join her on stage to talk about their work together, including Wes Anderson ( Isle of Dogs, The French Dispatch, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise King- dom), Bong Joon-ho ( Snowpiercer, Okja ), Sally Potter (Orlan- do ) and Joanna Hogg (The Souvenir, Caprice) . Also, Tilda Swinton’s Film Equipment (28 February–26 April), a free exhibit, accompanied the season which has been curated in close collaboration with BFI and her personal archive. We look back at the actress’ film career that spans over 30 years from the beginning and follows her progression to where she is today. Katherine Matilda Swinton (born 5 November 1960) is a Brit- ish actress known for her roles in both independent arthouse films and blockbusters. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 2007 film Mi- chael Clayton . She also won the BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Actress for the 2003 film Young Adam and has received three Golden Globe Award nominations. She began her career in experimental films, directed by Derek Jarman, starting with Caravaggio (1986), followed by The Last of England (1988), and then Will We Wake (1998), her intimate and epic directorial debut produced for the anthology film Mil- lennial Fever for BBC2’s art strand Tx. Tilda also starred in War Réquiem (1989), and The Garden (1990). She won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Fes- tival for her portrayal of Isabella of France in Edward II (1991) and starred in Sally Potter's Orlando (1992) for which she was nominated for the European Film Award for Best Actress. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her perfor- mance in The Deep End (2001), the taut Hitchcockian thriller which launched her Hollywood career. She followed this with appearances in Vanilla Sky (2001), Adaptation (2002), Constan- tine (2005), Julia (2008), and I Am Love (2009). She then won the European Film Award for Best Actress and received a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the psychological thriller We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011). She is also known for her performance as the White Witch in The Chronicles of Narnia series (2005– 2010) and the Ancient One in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise.
