The Bite Magazine - Autumn/Winter 2019 - Issue 26

Innovative eyewear designer Victor Wong wows Jada Brookes with his AW19 ‘Wild’ collection that has animal magic. bite accessories C hinese creative Victor Wong could well be regarded as a fashion designer showing his collections every season in a catwalk show, except his designs are for eyewear. In fact, he is the first eyewear designer to have launched a new seasonal collection in such shows with his brand alone and recently, it was the second time he had been part of the London Fashion Week official schedule. Known for his iconic and artistic designs, the University for the Creative Arts graduate who received his MSc (Masters in Science) degree in 2014 and founded his brand the following year has launched five highly coveted and successful eyewear collections to date. His well- fitted, wearable pieces express his aesthetic style through his elegant yet unfussy eyewear design and blend luxury with functionality. Perhaps the most innovative eyewear designer, Victor Wong’s designs are futuristic, iconic and out of this world. You’re sure to get noticed immediately with the Old School Wave, a blue lens glasses with a wave design surfing along the rim of the frame, while Pink Killer will have you seeing squares thanks to its symmetric shapes in shades of pink and black. Instead of wearing your heart on your sleeves, why not wear them on your eyes. The Pink Heart glasses feature lens in the shape of a heart with an eyebrow design on the rim in gold, linked by pearl-like gemstones. Kiss Me Anyway is very interesting and intriguing as the lens feature the face of a man and woman inches from sealing that kiss, only to be separated by a thick gold rim. You can’t get enough of Big Kiss, which is in the shape of a woman’s lips with fur on the bottom part of the lens and the iconic rim in gold. Time Difference has a kind of yin and yang effect that is so versatile and mind-blowing, while Royal Gold is simply amazing with its cat-eye shape and two-toned lens in black and gold. You won’t need a mask for that masquerade ball when you have glasses like these. This season, Victor amazes us yet again with his AW19 collection entitled ‘WILD’ inspired by the African Wodaabe nomads. In their language the name means ’people of the taboo’ who are regarded as ‘herdsmen of the sun’. In their tradition, the Wodaabe people believe that facial and bodily scars and scratches are a symbol of courageous experiences that bring them respect. A designer who likes to explore new shapes and materials for glasses as well as innovative ways to wear them, Victor replaced the lenses with silk gauze, which can be found in his previous collection. By using silk gauze as ‘skin’ and embroideries as ‘tattoos’, he embroidered African wild animal prints onto the new ‘lenses’, taking us on a journey through the African wilderness through the eyes of the Wodaabe herdsman.
