The Bite Magazine - Summer 2019 - Issue 25

bite artist review L ooking at multimedia artist Indira Cesarine’s work from when she was young until now, it is evident that she was a child prodigy in creative art and other mediums. It was from participating in after school programs such as art, dance, music and foreign languages that drew her to the more creative choices. When she was 14 years old, Indira moved to New York City to attend Parson’s School of Design’s intensive summer art program for high school students and also stayed at Choate Rosemary Hall, a boarding school located in Connecticut. “After high school, I attended Columbia University and graduated with a triple major in Art History, Women’s Studies and French. I moved to Europe after college to work as a photographer, and have been focusing on contemporary art full time for the last five years.” Always learning and honing her skills thanks to her love of studying new techniques, Indira is currently taking education classes at the School of Visual Arts and the New York Academy of Art, both of which she says have excellent programs for post-graduate studies. Having studied art since she was 6 years old, Indira may not recall her first piece of art then but she remembers her first feminist art- work at the age of 14 when she did a series of ‘women on the cross’ paintings in Indian ink, which was pretty intense. She says she has always been drawn to work thematically and is often inspired by her own personal experiences as well as women’s history. “One of the most important parts of that process is always having an idea that inspires me, and then taking off with it. I tend to work across a lot of different mediums to express my concepts as in [much] depth as possible.” Amazedly, she had her first solo show at the age of 16 at Paul Mellon Arts Centre. She would later present her work at many more art gal- leries, museums and festivals including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Mattatuck Museum, CICA Museum, San Luis Obispo Muse- um of Art, Getty Images Gallery, French Embassy Cultural Centre, Art Basel Miami, Cannes Film Festival and the International Festival Photo Mode to name a few. Her work was auctioned at Sotheby’s New York for the annual ‘Take Home A Nude’ art benefits in 2017 and 2018, and at Artwalk NY 2018 benefitting the Coalition for the Homeless.
