The Bite Magazine - Summer 2019 - Issue 25

Jada Brookes checks out some of the recent and soon-to-be released singles covering various genres of music. bite new music nown as the vocalist for American synthpop band Chairlift as well as writing and producing Beyoncé’s single ‘No Angel’, singer-songwriter and record pro- ducer Caroline Polachek recently released her single ‘Door’, the first taste of a forthcoming, larger solo project from the artist to be released later this year. A song that is almost six minutes long, ‘Door’ is described as an addictively groove- heavy odyssey, grounded yet heady track in which Caroline guides us organically through warm waves of acoustic guitar, glittering synths, and car-shaking bass into a minute-long wordless vocal solo. The video directed by the artist herself and Matt Copson moves through a surreal series of portals, through warped suburbia and gothic psychedelia, into airbrushed abstraction. In it, we see Caroline accompanied by two greyhounds, drift- ing through an optically dazzling sequence of hallway doors, gates, blooming mirrors, and whirling landscapes. As it opens up, you feel like you’re engulfed into a balloon until you’re taken to a scene through a window of Caroline sitting on top of a roof at night with a quarter moon and stars behind her. An artistic music video that has many shapes and references to someone the singer is trying to reach,‘Door’ presents an interesting representation of the creative mind of Caroline Polachek. Your attention is kept in check as whilst you are watching the artist sing, other correlations make this video worth viewing. The multi-mirror effect in one of the scenes has the singer in different positions, taking you on a journey through each one while she sings, “You open the door / to another door, to another door / to another door, to another door / And I’m running through to you”. Throughout the remainder of the video, we are taken through a seemingly never-ending narrow corridor of doorways, while the outline of Caroline’s face in heavy dark make-up, almost fading at times, keeps us occupied and we experience her amazing vocal range. A very intriguing music video that has a lot going on but is never boring,‘Door’ is quite an interesting concept to watch.
