The Bite Magazine - Spring 2019 - Issue 24

Romance of the ‘70s Valentina Bulava looks at the SS19 collection of Odd People and outlines her favourite pieces that nod to the retro era of the ‘70s. bite fashion Quite casual but stylish is the Muscle Tank in Daisy, White, Black and Pe- ony, created from washed lightweight cotton jersey with a crystal VOLT embellishment. This can be worn with matching shorts. The Hooded Blouse in Black in tencel georgette with cascading ruffles and tie details, along with all-over multi-colour crystal constellation embellishment will certainly get you noticed. The ‘Don’t Call Me Baby’ Printed Large Size Scarf in Camelia, Grey and Jade made from silk-cotton voile with a ruffled border is a statement-mak- ing garment that speaks volumes, especially in the Camelia hue. While the Printed Cold Shoulder Maxi-Dress in Peony and Grey and silk chiffon with romantic cascading ruffles and gathered oversized sleeves is dynamically sophisticated. The collection was inspired by Hollywood circa 1975, David Bowie’s fu- turistic psycho-thriller, The Man Who Fell to Earth and his album Station to Station, and also pays homage to Los Angeles’ rock and roll legacy. The zig-zag emblem on his alter-ego Ziggy Stardust inspired their Volt logo which has a thunderbolt cutting through the shadow of a skull. This symbol is featured on some of the garments. Especially admirable are the Victorian motifs of silk chiffon silhouettes with frills and ruffles made with starry Swarovski crystal constellations on tencel georgette, alongside the use of silk-cotton and lightweight cotton jersey. All as Design Scene wrote seems to “emphasise the decadence of this moment without forgetting the world’s more existential affinity for space exploration and futurism.” I also admire Odd People’s legacy of showing a bit of skin vis-à-vis the elbow and shoulder cut-outs. The creative directors of the brand are work- ing hard to develop the brand and plan to open flagship stores in different countries. Presently, their collection is available at participating stores in the United States, Canada, Asia, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, the UK, Germany, Cyprus, Russia, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan and the United Arab Emirates. https://odd-people.com
