BUSTLING METROPOLIS THAT EMANATES CUL-
TURE AND EXCITEMENT. KIRK MAILE RECOUNTS
HIS TRIP TOTHE BIG APPLE.

ew York, New York! A city depicted countless
times in lm and television, so much so that
the city itself has become a celebrity. Even New
York-native Alicia Keys sang about the bustling
metropolis city, following in the footsteps of
Frank Sinatra, U2, Sex Pistols and other such
artists. Its credits are far too numerous to mention but over the
years we’ve seen it as a backdrop for romance, laughter and drama
as well as being destroyed by alien invaders and giant lizards in sev-
eral lms. It’s a place that is engrained into our subconscious, but
with that comes the weight of expectation.
The rst time I visited the city, I was far from disappointed and
found NewYork to be exactly as I imagined it to be, right down to
the nest detail. It was because of this, that I spent the entirety of
the trip gawping vacantly at everything that happened to enter my
eld of vision. Even the most mundane event evoked images of the
silver screen.‘Oh look, steam is rising from that manhole cover, just
like in the movies!’ ‘Oh look, the taxis are yellow, just like in the
movies!’ In fact I became a parody of ‘the tourist in New York’; just like
in the movies. It was only when I arrived back home and someone asked
me what I actually did while I was over there, it dawned on me that I had
done absolutely nothing. I hadn’t visited a single landmark, or absorbed
the culture at all; I had wandered around with my mouth-agape for ve
whole days.
A few years later, the opportunity to visit the city again presented
itself, so this time I was determined not to let it go to waste. Upon ar-
rival, after checking into the hotel in Manhattan, I promptly set out for the
tourist attractions, beginning with one of the most iconic...
