T
he picturesque village of Alkham is sit-
uated at the southern end of the Kent
Downs, just an hour and a half from
central London. At the centre of the
village, with views across the valley, the Marquis
at Alkham is a sophisticated ‘restaurant with
rooms’ – formerly the village pub, it was given a
facelift in ’08 and now boasts a fresh, luxurious
style.
The restaurant offers a contemporary take on
British theme, and the decor shows off polish
oak floors, exposed beams and original brick-
work, set off by stylish modern lighting. Head
chef Charles Lakin’s wonderfully presented dish-
es are seasonally inspired and locally sourced.
There are set lunch and dinner options as well
as a la carte, and the tasting menu is the perfect
option for the indecisive amongst us! We
enjoyed superb Dover crab, crisp pigs head and
trotter, and Romney Marsh lamb tenderloin. The
menus change regularly, and the drinks menu
includes a showcase of Kentish wines and local
real ales. It’s no surprise that the Marquis was
recently awarded a Rising Michelin Star.
With five luxury guestrooms, the Marquis com-
bines the best of a sophisticated boutique hotel
with quintessential rural England. It’s surrounded
by genteel countryside, and in fact the valley,
rolling hills and narrow country lanes are part of
an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Arrive at the Marquis in time for a delicious
champagne afternoon tea, before heading out to
explore. You can wander the surrounding coun-
tryside, or perhaps visit the historic towns of
Dover or Canterbury. Then it’s back to the
Marquis in time for a superb dinner and then
head to your room to relax. The decor is con-
temporary and chic, with comfy King-size beds,
luxury cotton linen, and LCDTVs,Wi-Fi and lux-
ury bathrooms with monsoon showers and
under floor heating. The two ‘Luxury’ rooms
look out over the pretty gardens and beyond
and the ‘Superior’ rooms have views over the
AlkhamValley. There’s also a suite with two sep-
arate rooms, for those wanting more space or
perhaps families.
So whether you’re looking for an out-of-town
restaurant, a weekend break in the countryside
or a stop on the way to or from France, you
can’t go wrong in this beautiful corner of East
Kent.
