The Met Ball

The Met Ball, aka the Costume Institute Gala, aka the most fabulous night of the fashion calendar is definitely the biggest red carpet event of the year. Demureness and playing it safe go out the window as everyone scrambles to out-outrageous one another, sometimes beautifully, sometimes horrendously. This year’s theme was all about futuristic fashion and technology in line with the Met’s new Manus x Machina; Fashion in an Age of Technology exhibition leading to some truly strange outfits and a few pretty frocks. As far as red carpet’s go there was definitely a lot of brave choices BUT some of the best looks of the night kept it pretty rather than try hard. Here’s my rundown of the best, the unexpected and the downright wrong.

Blake Lively was as beautiful as always in a chiffon gown by Burberry with Lorraine Schwartz earrings. Nothing groundbreaking in terms of style but she sure does look beautiful!

You could study this image of Lily Rose Depp forever and a day and still never quite be able to master that look of Parisian insouciance and youthful swagger that allows her to look so effortlessly striking in Chanel Haute Couture – *Sigh*. Clearly, this ones star is definitely going to rise and quite beautifully too.

Allison Williams gown was a bespoke 3D printed number by Peter Pilotto – the perfect mix of fashion and the wonders of modern technology. If only my printer were quite so clever.

Whilst the red carpet was awash with couples, the twosome shot that stole the show has to be of the indomitable Anna Wintour in white Chanel alongside her daughter Bee Shafer, who looked radiant in Alexander McQueen. Talk about the ultimate family portrait!

For an unexpected take on the tuxedo take notes from Alexa Chung in custom-made Thakoon. Sparkly, nonchalant and more than a little bit fabulous – it’s the perfect combination.

And as for the less than fabulous – Kanye wore jeans (the less said about that the better), Zayn Malik wore a tuxedo that was part armour and Katy Perry accessorized her Prada gown with a Tamagotchi. That’s right, a TAMAGOTCHI! The mind truly boggles.
